Harvesting FLAX near Buer

Flax was the blessing and also the curse for the farming people.
It took a lot of steps from harvesting the flax to weaving the linnen. All family members were involved in this labour intensive work throughout the year. For the Heuerling families this often was the only cash income. When linnen prices went down due to mechanisation in the middle of the 19th century, the farmers were forced to emigrate to industrial areas or to America.
